Broeker was born and raised in Kokomo where he began taking piano lessons in third grade, then saxophone lessons in 6th grade and clarinet and flute lessons in high school. While in high school, along with concert, jazz, and marching band, he taught sax and clarinet lessons, and formed his own dance band. A student of Larry Kirkman, he won the Kokomo Symphony Concerto competition and performed with the Kokomo Symphony Orchestra.
From 1982-86 he attended the prestigious Indiana University School of Music, graduating in 1986 with a Bachelors of Music in Woodwind Studies. While there, as well as continuing study of sax, flute, and clarinet, he also learned to play and studied the oboe and bassoon. He considers himself very fortunate to be able to spend 4 years studying privately with world renown classical saxophonist Dr. Eugene Rousseau. Or saxophone teachers at IU include Daniel Deffayet, Larry Teal, Jean Lansing, Dr. Kenneth Fisher, Thomas Liley, Michael Jacobson, and Fumiyoshi Miyazawa. He also studyed privately with, and spend 3 years in the big band of esteemed jazz educator David Baker.
Neil continues to play professionally, recently, performing and touring with Andy Williams in Branson, MO,
Starting in Jan. of 2003, Neil spent a little over a year apprenticing and performing woodwind instrument repair at Musician's Repair and Sales in Indianapolis, IN. While in Indianapolis he was able to spend time learning instrument repair with master repair technician Ning Pan. After moving back to Branson, MO in 2004, while playing shows at night, he spent time adding to his repair knowledge through study on his own, and frequent trips to The Woodwind Corner to watch and learn from Mike and Joel Lomax.
Neil currently resides in Avon, IN, (a suburb of Indianapolis), playing, teaching, and doing repair work.
Broeker has been playing professionally for 30 years and has performed in a wide range of settings from amusement parks, cruise ships, theaters, studios, PBS specials, and big bands, to touring internationally with Andy Williams.
